Oak Cliff Dominates ‘Best of Big D’
Our friends at D Magazine have started their own ‘Best of Big D‘ (à la what The Observer has been doing for years with it’s ‘Best Of‘ list) and the results are in their August issue as well as on the D Mag website. Color us completely impressed that North Oak Cliff was so well represented – but we’re not surprised! Oak Cliff is setting the new standard in restaurants and retail for the city, and now the secret is out.
The Winners Are:
Best Bartender – Eddie “Lucky” Campbell, Bolsa (Readers Choice)
Best Chocolatier – Dude, Sweet Chocolate (D Magazine Choice & Readers Choice)
Best Breakfast – Normas (Readers Choice)
Best Wine List Under 50 Wines – Bolsa (Readers Choice)
Best Gift Shop – Bishop Street Market (Readers Choice)
Best Gay Bar – Jack’s Backyard (D Magazine Choice)
Congratulations to the winners!

Glad to know Jack’s Backyard id a gay bar-had no idea.
Here’s what D Mag said about Jack’s:
“We hesitate to call Jack’s a gay bar, considering the diversity of its Oak Cliff clientele. But there’s no denying Jack’s gay-friendly vibe and lineage: co-owner Kathy Jack spent more than 20 years working for Caven Enterprises, owner of Oak Lawn’s most successful gay establishments. While the twentysomething gay crowd parties and poses along Cedar Springs Road, a mature crowd has discovered the charm of Jack’s: a rollicking gravel patio with live music, a cozy-cool lounge, and an inclusive crowd void of pretense.”
Actually, D’s been doing its Best of Big D since 2001. But this is the first year they included readers’ choice picks.
How little we know. I thought Jack’s was a Tranny bar!
A granny bar? Come on… the crowd at Jack’s isn’t that old!
In the end…hesitating or not, they still called it a gay bar. A little misconstrued I think.
Who cares what kind of bar it is. I love Jack’s. It is one of the most comfortable, laid back places in the Cliff. Service is always good.
You’re right about that, Kat. They even treat us Geeezers well!
Jack’s rules, and I’m not gay. Their turkey burger, fries, and ranch are drool-worthy.
