Sneak Peek at Southern Maid
You’ve probably noticed the construction that’s been happening at the old tire shop at the corner of Davis and Polk for the past several months. If all goes as planned the latest Southern Maid donut franchise will open at 937 West Davis sometime next week.
Turns out the same franchisee that is set to open the Oak Cliff location also owns the location at the corner of Continental and Riverfront, so I thought we’d give you a quick preview of what’s coming.
The menu is what you would expect from a donut chain, although the don’t have nearly the number of donut options that Lone Star Donuts offers.
I tried the traditional glazed donut and the jalapeƱo, sausage and cheese kolache. I have to admit, I was pleasantly surprised by both options. The donut had a light yeasty flavor and was fluffy – there’s nothing I dislike more than a heavy donut that sits like lead in your stomach for hours after eating it. This wasn’t heavy at all.
As for the kolache – I’ve spent more than my share of time stopped in West, Texas on my way up and down I-35 sampling the kolaches there, and while the Southern Maid kolache was good, it was not an authentic Czech kolache. The dough wasn’t as flavorful as I would have hoped, but the sausage was fine and in a pinch I’d probably order it again.
I’ll be very interested to see how Southern Maid does – especially given the fact that it’s immediately across the street from one of my favorite Mexican bakeries (Vera’s Panderia) and not more than a mile from Lone Star Donuts. I do think the fact that they are incorporating a drive through window should give them a convenience factor that should give morning commuters a sugar boost.
