Brew Riot Beer Festival at Eno’s June 12th

May 15, 2010 5 Comments by admin

Eno’s has just announced Brew Riot, their inaugural summer festival which celebrates the world’s most celebrated beverage: Beer. Head out to the Bishop Arts District on June 12th to sample local brewers wares and meet the folks who toil late into the night combining the perfect amount of barley, wheat, and hops to make their concoctions stand out from the rest. Festivities start at 6pm and will go late into the night. A suggested donation of $20 is requested at the gate, and once you’re in, free beer awaits. Proceeds benefit your very own Quality of Life promoting non-profit in the Southern Sector, Go Oak Cliff!

RSVP at facebook here, or simply show up at Eno’s. See you all there!

As a homebrewer, I applaud Eno’s for putting this event together. What rubbed me, and fellow homebrewers, the wrong way was the entry fee. I want to spread the gospel of homebrewing, I just don’t think contributing brewers should have to pay in order to donate beer. Maybe it’s some crazy TABC law. At any rate, good luck with the event.

    Hi Wim,

You bring up a good point….I’ll forward your concern on to Eno’s. I did notice that most of the homebrew competitions listed on the BJCP site have an entry fee:
    http://www.bjcp.org/apps/comp_schedule/competition_schedule.php

I don’t know if that’s the main brewing sanctioned organization though.

Did you notice that the Eno’s entry fee is 3-4 times what the other fees are in the link you posted? They all seemed to be between $5 and $7 while Eno’s required $20.

Yes, and I did speak to the organizers of the event. They noted that the cost is to cover the fencing, permitting, insurance, security, and port-o-let fees. Since Oak Cliff is “dry”, the costs are greater to hold an outdoor open-container event. Eno’s is having to build a 6 foot fence, hire 4 off-duty City police officers at $35/hr (minimum 4 hours), provide 3 port-o-lets, and more to help get the word out for homebrewing. My hunch is that the other cities have far fewer barriers and more than likely, a larger homebrew constituancy to offset the costs. They did note that Flying Saucer also holds a homebrew competition that’s $10/entry and that is in a “wet” area, so permitting is a lot less restrictive.

i guess the fee also included paying for the disposable plastic cups they gave out? perhaps i’m deluded when i think of oak cliff businesses as caring about sustainability, but i did not expect to see mountains of single-serving plastic cups as the aftermath of this event. i just attended the beer festival last week hosted by Flying Saucer in Rockwall where part of what you got was a 4-ounce souvenir glass, which seems like a far better approach.

    very disappointing.
